From the Foreword

International Book Awards Finalist"The Commander of Hawkins Hill . . . is a welcomed addition to the literature of The Bahamas. Barrie’s autobiography is an important record of that period of Bahamian history during which we transformed from a sleepy village with limited scope for economic and social advancement to a period of empowerment for those willing to apply their natural talents and hard work to the task of nation building."
—Hubert A. Ingraham, Former Prime Minister of The Bahamas

Synopsis

n a moment of youthful dreaming, J. Barrie Farrington stood on the roof of his family's Hawkins Hill home, surveyed all of Nassau and sensed an opportunity to become totally involved in The Bahamas' future. His destiny was to include full participation in civic affairs associated with a developing island nation.

Starting with his early life in the 1940s, a rustic time for the islands that live within idyllic memory, J. Barrie recounts how a simple education and early employment opportunities led him to assume leadership roles within the hotel industry and to develop a variety of entrepreneurial skills. He revisits the politics of the times and his service in the Senate in the late 1960s, a precursor to his representing hotel employers and owners in ever-evolving industrial relations and serving on Government Boards, including the Bahamas Electricity Corporation and Bahamasair. In stories interwoven with details of his family life and his passion for fit living, we explore with him the fine line—if there even is one—between one man's love of life and the history of a nation.
